Band Bio From their Official Site:
A Few Choice Words About
Scrüj MacDuhk
Scrüj MacDuhk began as a "jam" in my dining room back in 1995. My son had invited a couple of musician friends home to do some jamming. It was rude, it was crude, it was loud, it was raucous, but it was the most exciting and danceable music I had heard since Queen Ida and The Bon Temps Zydeco Band hit the Main Stage at the Winnipeg Folk Festival back in 1982.
Within minutes the entire household was bopping, reeling and cavorting around in abandoned delight. It was a Newfoundland fiddle tune played with such an original energy, it blew us away. The old and jaded folkies around my house actually got up and danced. We were swept away by the energy of the music and the most impressive thing was that the music was acoustic. "Electricity", not generated by a hydro dam or wind power, but generated by the alchemy of the collective efforts of great musicians. It was a spine tingling beginning to what has developed into one of Canada's best young bands.
Scrüj MacDuhk, is, in the best sense, truly a folk revivalist band. Collectively they are rewriting and renewing traditional folk music entirely on their own terms without falling into the trap of (con)fusing "Folk" with "Rock" and sounding like another bunch of prepubescent rockers who have just discovered acoustic music. First rate instrumentalists, they reach into celtic music, appalachian old time string band music, the music of French Canada, the original songs of resident writer, Jeremy Walsh and anything else that touches their musical souls.
Coming from varied musical backgrounds, Scrüj MacDuhk consists of six old souls between the ages of 18 and 26. Ruth Moody brings her superb voice to the band as well as excellence on the piano and bodhrán. Guitarist Jeremy Walsh is a songwriter of infinite skill in the tradition of Paxton and Guthrie. Fiddler Jeremy Penner adds harmony vocals to his ace fiddling. Banjoist Leonard Podolak delivers driving rhythms and honest singing to the mix. Oliver Swain on bass fiddle and vocals brings a bottom end and a bottom line to the group and Christian Dugas on percussion and vocals adds flawless timing and youthful exuberance to the band.
Scrüj MacDuhk can play and sing and entertain. What really makes them special in my view is that their selection of music is first class. Good songs, good tunes, good hearts and good times.
Keep on Picking,
The Old Jaded Folkie
