Oysterband (known as The Oyster Band until 1991) continue the traditional of blending rock'n'roll versions of folk songs with originals that are influenced by tradition. The chief difference between them and the older bands, is that their brand of rock'n'roll is drawn from more contemporary sources, and they have a sound that seems at home in the 1980's and 1990's.
They emerged from the breakup of a traditional folk group called Fiddler's Dram; their first album, 1982's English Rock'N'Roll : the Early Years (1800-1850) was the only one to feature acclaimed singer Cathy Leseur, who left to join Ashley Hutching's group the Albion Band. Of particular note in their discography is 1990's Freedom and Rain, a collaboration with June Tabor - it seems to be the only time this elegant, refined singer attempted real rock music.
